Not what you'd expect


Arnold took ballet lessons from Marianne Claire (the ballerina pictured) specifically for body building competitions. Building the muscle is one part of body building, but displaying the muscles for the judges is entirely another. He learned ballet movements to better accentuate his body and learn to transition smoothly from one position to the next.

He did everything he could to stack things in his favor, including things that many would consider underhanded. He told one contestant in Europe that the latest thing in the U.S. was to scream while striking a pose. Supposedly, the guy screamed for each pose and was ejected from the competition. In Pumping Iron he speaks about how easy it is to psych out Franco Columbu, a body building competitor.
