Rainy days and Mondays

That's Houston, and a whole lot of rain.

  1. The last time Houston was flooded, I think in the early 2000’s, I worked for an automation company that had delivered the previous year an automated laboratory mice cage cleaning system to the Baylor College of Medicine. The research lab had 50,000 mice, whose lineage, and thus genetic details could be traced for generations, which is an important factor in research. Every mice cage (actually a clear polycarbonate molding with a removable top) had to be changed every couple of days, and our system required the mice only to be removed by their personnel and the dirty cage placed into the system load point. All dumping of bedding material and feces, washing, rinsing, and drying was automated to keep human contact with the cages to a minimum. This entire facility was located in the BASEMENT of a building on campus. IT FLOODED, with the loss of all their research mice. I’m sitting here today wondering if they learned from that catastrophe, and moved the facility to higher ground.
