Some sobering thoughts from Ol' Remus at the Woodpile Report this morning.

It's looking like 1860 in America, or the Fourth Turning, or the fourth canvas of The Course of Empire, or the End Times prophesied in Christian eschatology. To get the flavor of what's ahead, consider this statement from a sitting Governor, quoted from the Independent Sentinel:
Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin said Republicans might have to fight to win back rights that were lost if Hillary wins. “I want us to be able to fight ideologically, mentally, spiritually, economically, so that we don't have to do it physically,” Bevin said during a speech at the Value Voters Conference in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. “But that may, in fact, be the case.” Patriots may need to shed blood to “reclaim” the country if Clinton wins ... His comments didn't need clarification. We heard. If Hillary and her leftists think the “deplorables” and their enablers will sit still for her taking our Bill of Rights away, she needs to rethink it.
Pretty wild, ayewott? But wait, there's more. Add the ongoing and ever more obvious collapse of the economy and civil society, and the mainstreaming of survivalism, and the spectacular rise of Black Lives Matter and the Alt Right, et al. Stir in ever-rising gun sales, the spread of infrared and thermal imaging and their countermeasures, and of comms and serious intel, the growing popularity and professionalism of militias, the coast-to-coast stockpiling of ammo and long-term storage foods. This is antebellum stuff.
Add the reenergized movement to carve new states out of existing states—the state of Jefferson from northern California, or the proposed North Colorado, for two. Add the ongoing secessionist movements. Add the states that are emulating the late and unlamented East Germany, with near-total surveillance down to the beat cop level, and pointless harassment, using SWAT raids for formerly routine police procedures, blatant corruption, asset forfeiture and all the rest, which is giving rise to undergrounds not materially different from the early phase of the Maquis in occupied France.
This presidential election is a surface symptom of what lies beneath. The center has been eviscerated, destabilizing the whole system to where failure at one nexus easily releases constraints at others, risking a cascading collapse from what would otherwise be trivial causes. Whatever civil disaster you're prepping for, you'll be right. Stay away from crowds.

Think that's a little on the wild side?  Then consider some of the other headlines just this morning:

Rioting and looting come to Charlotte.  It would have been a good thing had all those truck drivers on I-85 been armed.  Ten seconds of concentrated fire would have cleared the highway of looters and taught the survivors a lesson.

Meanwhile, our political leaders focus on what really matters - cow farts.  Make no mistake, it's not about farts, it's about control.

And on my recent trip up Highway 88, there was a professionally printed State of Jefferson sign put up on the side of the road for everyone to see.  This cow fart legislation stupidly encourages this sort of secessionism.

Get a load of this sign I was fast enough to photograph near Yreka, far northern California, earlier this year.  Ol' Remus might be on to something.

  1. I've been seeing a lot of "State of Jefferson XX" placards popping up here in El Dorado County over the last year.

  2. The barn is just before Moo Donna going N on I5. It's had that painted on it for a long time.
Wish they would call the movement Northern California with a flag that had Mt Shasta and the North star...
